Just like other surgical specialties and specific procedures, plastic surgery has earned its fair share of myths that people can’t seem to shake. At Cincinnati Plastic Surgery, we want to break these myths. For some patients, these myths may serve as the reason you haven’t had a procedure yet. Below, we’ll bust some of the more common plastic surgery myths we’ve heard over the years.
Cosmetic Surgeons and Plastic Surgeons are the Same
Despite having similar names, cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons are not the same. Typically, cosmetic surgeons hold board-certifications in different areas. Some of the more common board-certifications include ear, nose, and throat or dermatology. So, while the doctors who add cosmetic surgery to their bevy of services are truly doctors, they haven’t received the same vigorous training as a board-certified plastic surgeon. In fact, cosmetic surgery is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. However, plastic surgery is recognized by the ABMS.
Before scheduling your surgery, check for your surgeon’s board-certifications. Dr. Martin is a board-certified plastic surgeon (you can check his credentials online) and is a member of the ASPS.
Plastic Surgery Only Helps Women
For years, people assumed that plastic surgery was only for women. Even with centers offering procedures for men, the myth still persists. While women still account for the majority of patients, the number of men who opt for surgery is growing. At our practice, many men turn to surgery to correct their appearance. Also, some of our male patients turn to our various dermal fillers to correct the appearance of their face.
Liposuction Serves as Weight Loss Aid
While liposuction removes fat from targeted areas in your body, it should not serve as a weight loss aid. A surgical intervention like liposuction or a non-surgical procedure like CoolSculpting may help you lose some weight through the fat removal. However, you should not use either as your sole means of losing weight. Moreover, consider one or the other after you’ve reached your goal weight. Both help remove stubborn fat from your body.
You Can Get the Same Look as a Celebrity
Lastly, you shouldn’t go into a surgical consult expecting to get the same look as the latest celebrity. That’s not how plastic surgery works. Depending on the procedure, Dr. Martin takes a more conservative approach to surgery to ensure overall happiness with results. After all, people easily spot someone who had a certain procedure that wasn’t done correctly. Avoid the likelihood of that by taking a more conservative approach to your surgical goals.
Even though many have spoken out about these plastic surgery myths, they still persist in other places. We aim to provide you the most up-to-date information about the different procedures so you make an informed choice. If you’re considering any type of surgical procedure, turn to the surgeon other surgeons go to. Contact Cincinnati Plastic Surgery to schedule your free surgical consultation now.
